Electing young women
to office is important to all women!
We invite you to join Women Under Forty Political Action Committee
(WUFPAC) in our campaign to bring more young women to politics.
Because until more young women enter politics, women will continue
to be underrepresented in the leadership of this country.
We need more women in positions of power so that, as Madeleine
Albright says, “…they will improve the lot of women and girls
everywhere. They will raise issues that others overlook, pass bills
that others oppose, put money into projects others ignore, and seek
an end to abuses others accept.”
Women have gone far in achieving equality. But as we all
know, young women today still struggle with many of the same issues
that were of concern to women 50 years ago - childcare, adequate
health care for children and families, reproductive health, equal
pay, and juggling work and family.
Politics is one of the few areas where progress towards equality
has stagnated. This means that women’s issues and particularly issues
affecting young women do not have adequate representation in Congress.
There is a direct correlation between the number of women in a legislative
body and the passage of bills benefiting women and children. When
speaking of new legislation passed in a large part due to the bipartisan
Congressional Women’s Caucus, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison
(R-TX) said “It wasn’t that men were against these changes. They
just hadn’t considered the issue before because they hadn’t experienced
the problem in their own lives. As women have become a part of the
system, that’s changing.”
It is important for all women that young women are not only elected
to office, but that they also are active in the political
process, through education, voting, and membership in groups such
as WUFPAC. WUFPAC targets its electoral support to female candidates
of either party under the age of 40 running for state and federal
office. We are active in every election cycle helping women across
the country step into leadership roles and pursue their
political goals. WUFPAC also works to inspire young women to make
politics more a part of their lives because single young women are
the largest demographic group of nonvoters. Women need to
work together to gain the political power that can improve all women’s
lives.
Your contribution to WUFPAC will help young women start on the path
to leadership. As Marie Wilson, Founder of the White House
Project (which is working to elect the first woman President)
says in Closing the Leadership Gap, "I truly believe that if
we install enough women in leadership, they will create new policies
for old institutions, shifting the burden from one set of shoulders
to many, allowing women (and men) to be good parents and great leaders."
We hope you will consider joining our cause by contributing to WUFPAC.
